Initial
ENROLLMENT PERIOD
Age 65
Your first time enrolling in Medicare at age 65.
- Starts 3 months before you turn 65
- Includes your birthday month
- Ends 3 months after you turn 65
- 7-month total enrollment window
Annual
ENROLLMENT PERIOD
Oct 15 – Dec 7
For everyone with Medicare.
- Join Original Medicare
- Change to a Medicare Advantage plan
- Enroll in, change, or drop Part D
- New coverage starts Jan 1
You May Also Qualify for a Special Enrollment Period
If you experience a life event like moving or retiring, a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) allows you to make changes to your Medicare Advantage or drug coverage.
Life events that qualify
- Losing current coverage
- Moving
- Retiring
- Gaining new health coverage
- Changes to your Medicare plan
- Changes to your eligibility status
SEPs last two to three months. If you lose your job, Medicare Part B enrollment can extend to eight months.
During Your SEP, You Can:
- Enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B
- Make changes to your Medicare Advantage or drug plan
If you experience a qualifying life event and enroll in Medicare Part A or Part B during a Special Enrollment Period, you have two months to select a Medicare Advantage Plan (with or without drug coverage) or a standalone Part D plan.
