Do I Need Medicare If I Have VA Benefits?

If you were in the military, you might have health care through the VA (Veterans Affairs) or TRICARE. But when you turn 65, you may start to wonder if you also need Medicare.

You don’t have to sign up for Medicare when you turn 65 if you have VA benefits. But if you don’t sign up, Medicare won’t help pay for care you get outside of VA hospitals or clinics.

Additionally, if you choose not to enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period and you don’t have employer-sponsored coverage, you may have to wait until the next General Enrollment Period (January 1-March 31 each year) to enroll. You may also have to pay a penalty for late enrollment.

Can a Veteran Have Both Medicare and VA Benefits?

Yes, you can have both! If you have VA benefits and turn 65, you can sign up for Medicare too. The VA actually recommends signing up for Medicare Part A and Part B if you don’t have health insurance through your employer.

Having both gives you more choices for your care. However, they do not work together or pay for the same services.

  • VA Benefits cover care at VA hospitals and clinics
  • Medicare covers care at regular hospitals and doctor’s offices that accept Medicare.
  • Medicare helps pay when you go to a non-VA doctor or hospital.
  • VA benefits may help with things Medicare doesn’t cover, like hearing aids or some prescriptions.

Also, VA funding can change over time. Having Medicare can give you extra peace of mind if your needs change or you want to see a doctor outside the VA.

Comprehensive Coverage with the KelseyCare Advantage Core (HMO) Plan

If you sign up for Medicare, you can choose to get your care through Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan like KelseyCare Advantage.

The KelseyCare Advantage Core (HMO) plan is a great choice for veterans. Core doesn’t include drug coverage, which is perfect if you already get your prescriptions through TRICARE. Additionally, it includes dental, vision, over-the-counter (OTC) allowances and so much more for complete coverage.
