Every year, there's a set time called the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). It happens from October 15 to December 7. This is when people with Medicare can make changes to their plans.
You can:
- Switch to a different Medicare plan
- Add or drop prescription drug coverage
- Go from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan (or the other way around)
Changes you make during this time are effective January 1 of the following year.
Why is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period Important?
Even if you already have traditional Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or Medigap and Part D Drug plan, it’s a good idea to check your plan each year. Your health needs might change. Or your plan might change what it covers.
In the fall, your plan will send you some important letters. These may include:
- Evidence of Coverage (EOC) – shows what your plan covers
- Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) – shows what’s changing next year
However, not everyone receives these documents. For example, if you have a Medigap plan, you may not get an ANOC or EOC. That’s why it’s still important to compare your current coverage to other options during the Annual Enrollment Period.
Take time to explore whether your plan still meets your needs. If it doesn’t, this is your opportunity to switch plans. If you’re satisfied with your current plan and it’s still available for the next year, you don’t need to take any action. Your coverage will automatically continue.
