Does Medicare Cover Eye Exams and Glasses?

Your eyesight is very important, and it can change as you get older. Many people over 65 need help with vision problems like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. As you get close to age 65 and start thinking about Medicare, it’s good to know what vision care is covered. (For more general information on turning 65 and Medicare, visit our dedicated page.)

Vision Coverage with Original Medicare

Original Medicare usually does not cover regular eye exams or glasses. You would have to pay the full cost yourself.

But Medicare Part B may help with some vision care, such as:

  • Eye exams to check for eye diseases
  • Glaucoma tests
  • Yearly eye exams for people with diabetes
  • Eye tests for macular degeneration
  • Cataract surgery and one pair of glasses or contacts after surgery

After you pay your Part B deductible, you pay 20% of the cost. If you get care at a hospital, you may also have to pay a copayment.

Vision Coverage with Medicare Part C

If you want more vision benefits, you can sign up for Medicare Part C, also called a Medicare Advantage plan. KelseyCare Advantage is one of these plans. Explore our plans to see how comprehensive vision benefits can fit your needs.

Part C includes:

  • Eye exams
  • Treatment for eye problems or injuries
  • Help paying for glasses or contact lenses
